After an uncharacteristically dark video from Girls, Chris Owens brightens up for “Honey Bunny,” which continues the sexy car motif and features — whoa — Chris wearing a crop top (and somehow pulling it off). Dude is super giddy in the vid, and it’s probably ’cause he got to canoodle with his IRL girlfriend, who “loves him for all the reasons everyone hates him.” This is too cute, uuggggh.

Father, Son, Holy Ghost — the much awaited sophomore full-length from Girls — is out tomorrow in the US and today in Europe. “Love Life” didn’t make the album cut but it was featured as a bonus track on the European release. It’s a sunny melancholy number in which Chris Owens picks up the pieces of his broken heart and moves on, chin up, singing, “I guess that next time I’ll just have to give it another try.” Le sigh. After hearing what was possibly the most heartbreaking song from Girls, the duo follow up with a sunny number called “Honey Bunny.” It’s got surfer swirls, racing drums, and a beachy vibe. But it ain’t a Girls song if it’s not a little self-deprecating as well. D’aww, Chris, I love your bony body and dirty hair and the stuff that you say. The forthcoming sophomore album, judging from these two songs, seems to be filled with transitions and layers of emotion. “Honey Bunny” was my 19th song to write. I wrote it on my birthday in 2008. I think the fact that it’s No. 19 gives it a little perspective. My first songs were kind of like, “Ahhhh, Help!” This one has a bit of swagger to it, and some reflection about my mother. It’s a special song to me now, not for the sassy swagger bits as much the parts about Mama. But I think for the listener, it could be the exact opposite. The energy and optimism and determination in it is quite appealing. But that’s the great thing about these things, right? The fact that all of us are hearing something entirely different. I believe that. And so, in 2011, surfer guitar still rules.

The Girls video for new single “Vomit” is unlike any of the band’s previous releases — that means no floppin’ penises or pretty girls straight out of American Apparel catalogs. Instead, you’ve got a pretty red Mustang, shot sensually like in a car commercial, and some nighttime driving scenes. “Vomit” is the first single from Girls’ forthcoming album Father, Son, Holy Ghost. Somehow Chris Owens sounds more heartbroken than ever. The song has a slow start and lacks that sunny Californian feel we usually associate with Girls but it’s a beautiful track — painful, too. I especially love the shift at 4:10 (in sync with the shot of Owens’ crooked teeth, which I find endearing). Enjoy:

The long awaited sophomore album from Girls, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, is set for its US release on September 13th. We’ve got their new song “Vomit” for you to download [via P4K], which is a six and a half-minute somber ramble about looking for love. It sounds…. really, really sad. And then around the 4-minute mark, it starts to sound more like the Girls we know before it closes out with a gospel choir (?).
