Move over Justin Bieber, there is a new Tiger Beat/Gay heartthrob in town – and he’s legal (score). Chris Garneau played City Winery Friday night and despite the din of single gals/gay men eating and chattering over which he had to play delivered a beautifully detailed chamber pop performance. Comparisons have been and must be made between Garneau’s style and that of Regina Spektor; both artists share a predilection for simple piano tunes that tell a story incorporating elements of folk, carnival music, and classical instrumentation. No where is the likeness between the two artists more evident than in Garneau’s song “Fireflies” which features a carni-esque syncopated organ and fun fairytale lyrics. But Garneau is his own artist and has merits of his own namely, his stage presence. Garneau was well groomed and pert with impeccable posture and a breathy elocution/formal register that sounded like he was still singing when he was talking between sets lending a lilting quality to his sentences (so cute!). His latest release “El Radio” is out now on Absolutely Kosher Records and it’s worth a download. Enjoy the vid for “Fireflies” below.
