One of the more outstanding January releases catching our attention this new year is Chairlift‘s Something. Even its album title, which refuses to define it as a single concept, acknowledges the sophomore effort’s diverse tracks, stretching from funk-inspired pop of witchy sentiments to acoustic bed warmers. As undefinable as the album is, it stands as a defining moment in the band’s career — of not needing to adhere to one certain sound but having fun with trying on different ones. Something seems to define what Chairlift is as a band whereas their debut album Does You Inspire You was merely a practice round. Funky album starter “Sidewalk Safari” and impossible-to-spell single “Amanaemonesia” are still our groovy faves but don’t miss the more soft-winded tracks like “Frigid Spring.”

VIDEO: Jangula “Hanging Gardens”

We’ve been fans and friends of Jangula since early 2011 and have written about them several times here on The Morning After Pills. Those who have caught on early know them as a band who throws wild shows and inspires spontaneous dance circles, with a growing, loyal following. But everything they’ve put out thus far pales in comparison to their forthcoming EP, which I’ve previewed and cannot describe it in any other way than sooooo jang. I can tell 2012 is gonna be their year and it’s time you REALLY get to know these fellows. Firstly, enjoy a new video of their new track, “Hanging Gardens,” which can be found on the EP (drops in March!).

If you want to see them live (and yes, you want to see them live), their next show is at MERCURY LOUNGE on JANUARY 21st. They will be opening for the incredible UK band Fujiya & Miyagi. Can’t wait. See you guys there!!

COVER: Destroyer does New Order “Leave Me Alone”

The latest issue of Mojo features new wavers New Order on the cover along with a compilation album of Power, Corruption & Lies covers by various artists. Not sure if this is just from a lack of material to kick off 2012, but I get pretty excited about classic album tributes (except those Nevermind covers — Newermind or whatever – were absolute shite). I wanted to listen to the whole thing so I googled “Golden Filter Age of Consent” but the first search result was “What’s the age of consent in South Dakota?” so, here’s all I found instead… Destroyer’s interpretation of “Leave Me Alone” seems to be the only one available for streaming currently. It sounds like it could just be a Destroyer original, if we didn’t know any better. Enjoy!

Last Friday, Yeah Yeah Yeahs headlined the Jonathan Toubin Benefit show at Brooklyn Bowl with a bunch of other bands and DJs. All proceeds went to Jonathan’s medical bills in hopes for a speedy recovery from his horrible accident. Besos, Jonathan. VIDEO: The Cure “A Forest” (Live at Bestival 2011)

I recently saw The Cure on their Reflections Tour and got yelled at for standing up in the balcony seating (sorry but when The Cure is on, my body’s not telling me to glue ass to seat). Sheesh. Anyway, I also realized how freaking loveable Robert Smith is. Is he not? The band just released a live album, The Cure: Bestival Live 2011 , and all proceeds from its sales go to Isle of Wight Youth Trust (case and point). In accordance with the live record, they also released this live video of “A Forest”– one of their best tracks, imo — from Bestival 2011, which gets all moody and goody. Enjoy:
