Though they were Akron/Family’s opening act, the queenly quartet that is Warpaint played to a crowd of their own hard-won loyal subjects last Wednesday at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Evidence of this was the crust of barely legal teenage boys adhering to the front of the stage like barnacles hoping against hope that their favorite fairytale rock princesses would perform in skirts. I had to elbow a few of those suckers aside with an efficient point to my press pass and a “seriously don’t make me tell them you’re I.D. is a fake” look in order to snap pictures. Skirts were not worn but bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg and drummer Stella Mozgawa wore fetching red onsie pajama numbers (trés risqué… you know – if you’re Mormon).

All kidding aside, Lindberg and Mozgawa definitely became a team laying down a strong rhythm track on to which Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokal painted vivid vocals and ambient guitar riffs. Mozgawa, a nascent addition to the band, made a strong impression adding a stiffness to their sound that wasn’t there before. What with their banging rhythm section and cultivated ethereal mystic wiccan vibe they’re well on their way to becoming the female analog of Led Zeppelin. I got a chance to chat with the girls after their set and opined them of my Zeppelin theory and they like that. And then I stated that they had an occultist vibe and asked if that was intentional and I got silence. And then I asked if they had pentagram tattoos at which point I was escorted to the curb in a gentle but firm headlock by Mozgawa. After a while, I was permitted to return and I asked Mozgawa if they were all friends to which she replied “We’d have to be; we’re three females traveling around in a van.”

So there you have it; the Warpaint girls were super cool (shocker) of the home-grown L.A. variety. However, it’s worth noting that Wayman made mention of possibly relocating the band to Brooklyn. I guess we shall just have to wait and see about that. In the meantime, enjoy my pics from the show and check out the trailer for Theresa Wayman’s major motion picture debut “Pete Smalls Is Dead.”

It’s about goddamn time. I’ve long wondered why the socially autistic genius that is Billy Corgan stood by Courtney Love for as long as he did. The lead singer of Hole is just that -- a veritable black hole devoid of talent and self-awareness. Corgan in an interview with Rolling Stone referred to Love as an “abyss.” And regarding her use of songs he penned on Hole’s upcoming album, Nobody’s Daughter, he is quoted with saying “it would be a real big problem, because I haven’t given my permission.” So Nobody’s Daughter may find itself indefinitely in limbo until this matter gets sorted in court. Well, Courtney, Karma’s a bitch, huh. This must be Karmic kickback for her long-standing court battle with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic over rights to Nirvana L.L.C. Listen to Love outright admit that Corgan writes all her music in the video below (at 3:54 minutes) while she drags Dave Grohl’s name through the mud. Brace yourself Courtney -- your future holds many more karmic reparations to be reaped. All’s fair with Love when it’s war.

San Fran artist Myles Cooper’s song “Gonna Find Boyfriends Today” is the perfect soundtrack for this first springlike day as you troll for singles in Central Park (just remember in any game of grab-ass there must be two willing participants otherwise you’re a frotteur -- look it up). The vid is a Jim Henson acid flashback featuring a cartoon of what looks to be Mo’Nique drawn by Lisa Frank on an Apple II. Whoever said pain makes the best art never tripped on acid. Enjoy.

“French-American band” (whatever that means) Hold Your Horses has an uh-mazing video for their track “70 Million.” There are 30 works of art in this thing. If you’re looking to add a little variety to your Vednesday then invite some of your most (or least) learned amateur art appreciators over for a bacchanalian bout of “name that painting.” Just a suggestion (wink).
