In true swarthy underdog fashion, M.I.A. produces some of her best work when her back’s against the wall. A week after her album Maya was largely panned by critics, the rebel without a cause showcased her flair for eyebrow raising on Letterman last night when she performed “Born Free” along with several dopplegängers. It was a redeeming move after a series of missteps that have seemed to put her on track for a Kanye-like bout of over-exposure. Just don’t call it a comeback… yet.
