Live Review: Dum Dum Girls Webster Hall 04/03/10

The fecund-foursome known as Dum Dum Girls seems to be 2010′s answer to The Go-Go’s. After all, they deal in pert, short, down-strummed little ditties lasting no more than no more than 3 minutes and 30 seconds each that you can sing-along to no matter if you’re a contralto or a tenor, à la les go-go’s. And then there’s the much cultivated “look.” The pastels and half-tops of the bygone era of 80′s girl bands have been replaced with black mini-dresses befitting of Romy and Michelle at a funeral with fashionable hosiery and heels. Bangs still remain an important part of the equation, although not feathered.

Dum Dum Girls played to a largely unfamiliar crowd that kept growing throughout their set (they opened for Girls). They began with a Nico-esque cover of the Stone’s “Play With Fire” and got the crowd moving with “Rest of Our Lives.” All and all, it was good show and great exposure for the LA-based band that surely secured them some East Coast followers.
