I caught The Fancy on the fly this past Tuesday when they opened for The Vanguard and I was pleasantly surprised by their Belle and Sebastian-esque sound along with their peppy and pert stage presence. So… the story goes Clara Latham (guitar/vocals) met Seth Garrison (keyboards/vocals) at Oberlin College and they forged a friendship then a band, at least I think it was in that order… (actually I’m totally ad-libbing the friendship thing, b*tches could totally hate each other… you know… frenemies) and have moved various places making melodic music together. This latest incarnation of the Clara and Seth show is Brooklyn-based and sees the addition of Katherine Young on bassoon and Amy Cimini on viola, making them a well rounded chamber pop group to boot! Yah!
Enjoy the vid for “Breadwinners” below directed by Ry Russo-Young, winner of The 2009 Gotham Independent Film Award For “Best Film Not Playing At A Theater Near You” and mark your calenders for The Fancy’s next show January 07, 2010 at The Knitting Factory.
P.S. Specially thanks to Wesley of Family Records for correcting my use of the word oboe in reference to the bassoon (ha).
