Live Review: Freelance Whales at Webster Hall 12/18/2009

Queens-based Freelance Whales opened for Fanfarlo this past Friday night at Webster Hall. The pairing of the two bands proved to be a nice fit as they both share a predilection for a varied assortment of acoustic/amped string instruments and too many musicians on stage.

All joking aside, Freelance Whales delivered a beautiful set chock full of harmonies, glockenspiel, banjo and scads of sentimentality. Many audience members sang along with the band, especially to zesty “Generatorˆ2nd Floor”, the last song of their set. When asked, a random but large-enough-to-be-representative cross-section of the audience said that they were there to see Fanfarlo but thoroughly enjoyed the “whale band’s” show and would definitely look them up when they got home. I am here to help the kiddies make good on their promises. Remember, Santa’s watching.  Enjoy my pics of the show including the handwritten set list and live video of “Broken Horse” below. I also added a staged version of “Broken Horse” because its worth viewing… twice. Pre-order Freelance Whales’ first album “Weathervanes” here.
